Scoutmaster Minute: Star Wars

Take a moment and look around this circle. Hear the breeze through the trees? Hear the quiet hum of the night settling in?

Almost fifty years ago, George Lucas introduced the world to a line that nearly every person on Earth knows: “May the Force be with you.” When Obi-Wan Kenobi first explains the Force to Luke Skywalker, he doesn’t describe a superpower or a weapon. He says, “It’s an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.”

Later on, Master Yoda tells Luke on the swamp planet of Dagobah that we are luminous beings, not just crude matter.

When Scouting talks about “Duty to God” and “A Scout is Reverent,” people often wonder what that looks like in everyday life. Reverence doesn’t start inside four walls, and it doesn’t start with a lecture. It begins with attunement. It begins with noticing that you are not the center of the universe—that there is an invisible, sacred thread connecting every creature, every mountain, every tree, and every single person standing in this circle.

In Star Wars, the dark side is fast, easy, and seductive because it’s driven by anger, selfishness, and the desire to control everything around you. The light side requires patience, quiet, humility, and discipline. It demands that you listen before you strike, and that you respect life rather than dominate it.

Reverence is your light side. It is the conscious choice to pause before you react, to look at creation with awe instead of indifference, and to treat the person next to you as someone who carries sacred worth.

This week, when school feels chaotic, when social media is screaming for your attention, or when someone pushes your buttons, don’t reach for the anger. Step back. Take a deep breath. Feel the quiet ground beneath your feet. Remember that you belong to something far greater than yourself. Walk in the light, look for the good, and honor the creator who knit this world together.
